Projects
What are you getting rid of?
Each project has its own weight, its own banned items and its own right spot for the container. Pick yours.
- Garage, basement & attic cleanoutsYears of storage in one go: furniture, boxes, broken shelving and the things nobody wants back.
- Kitchen & bathroom remodelsCabinets, tile, drywall and old fixtures, with room left for the packaging from the new ones.
- Roof tear-offsOld shingles are dense. The weight allowance matters more here than the container's size.
- Yard waste & landscapingBrush, hedges, sod and stumps from a big weekend outside, kept apart from household junk.
- Moving & downsizingClear what isn't making the trip, timed so the container leaves before the closing or move-out.
- Estate cleanoutsClearing a parent's or relative's home at a pace the family can manage.
- Concrete, dirt & brickPatio slabs, old steps, brick and soil go in a small container, kept clean and kept low.
Before it arrives
Driveway or street?
Most Grand Rapids homeowners put the container in the driveway, on boards that spread the load. If it has to sit on the street or a sidewalk instead, the City of Grand Rapids asks for a Temporary Occupancy Permit first, and East Grand Rapids does not allow it at all.
Measure the spot, look up for wires and branches, and move the cars out the night before. The placement guide covers the rest, and the permit guide walks through the city application.

A few things never go in
Leftover chemicals, tires, rechargeable batteries, TVs and fridges all have their own drop-offs in Kent County. The list of what can't go in a dumpster says where each one goes instead.
